Guide for people moving

Moving checklist: what to do 8 weeks out to move day

Start 8 weeks before your move: get at least three written estimates and book a mover. Use weeks 6 to 4 to declutter and set up utilities, weeks 3 to 1 to pack and change your address, and keep a bag of essentials with you on move day.

  • Start a folder for quotes, receipts and contracts.

6 weeks before

2 weeks before

  • Update your address with your bank, employer, insurance and subscriptions.
  • Confirm the moving date, arrival window and final price with your mover.
  • Plan how pets and plants travel.
  • Use up food in the freezer.

1 week before

  • Finish packing and label each box with its room.
  • Pack an essentials bag: documents, medication, chargers, clothes, toiletries.
  • Take photos of electronics and valuables for the inventory.
  • Defrost and dry the fridge if it is moving.

Moving day

  • Check the inventory before you sign it.
  • Read the bill of lading before signing, and never sign a blank one.
  • Do a final walk-through of every room and closet.
  • Keep valuables, cash and documents with you.
