The basic formula
- Weight. Estimate it from an in-home or video survey. Typical weights run from about 1,500 lbs for a studio to 9,500 lbs or more for a 4-bedroom home.
- Linehaul rate. Your per-pound rate for the distance. Industry guides put interstate rates at roughly $0.50 to $0.70 per pound.
- Accessorials. Packing, materials, stairs, long carries, shuttle trucks, bulky items and storage.
- Fuel and seasonal adjustments. Peak season (May to September) supports higher rates.

Binding or non-binding?
A binding estimate wins trust and closes faster, but you carry the risk if the survey was wrong. A non-binding estimate protects you on weight, but federal rules cap collection at delivery at 110% of the estimate. Many movers offer binding not-to-exceed estimates to win competitive jobs.
How to win more long-distance jobs
- Call new leads fast. The first mover to reach a customer has the best chance.
- Offer a video survey so you can quote the same day.
- Send a clear, itemised written estimate.
- Buy leads for the routes you actually run.
